Finding Happiness Workshop
I just want to be HAPPY! Has there ever been a more Universal statement? I've never met a single person who didn't possess this desire. So how do we go about finding the ever elusive happiness we seek? And if it's true that everyone wants to be happy, why do so few of us actually achieve true and lasting happiness?
The ego often confuses happiness with pleasure, or the absence of pain, resulting in most of us at some point becoming pleasure seekers. Avoidance of pain is strong in people that we will do almost anything to escape it! We frequently lie to ourselves, use superficial distractions, drink alcohol, take drugs, thrill seek or even delve into a project, hobby, study group or noble cause to dull our awareness and avoid taking responsibility for the state of our lives.
One of the most beloved ways of distraction is through acquisition. We set our sights on something we think we want and set about trying to acquire it because we believe that once we have it we will finally be happy. We think that when we get the new car or the new house it will bring us the security and social status we so desperately want. But for those of us who have achieved the luxuries in life; a bigger house, an impressive car, a better job, more money, we realize that the acquisition can be exciting for a time but the feeling never lasts. Eventually the new car becomes an old one, your neighbor builds a bigger house and there is always someone with a better job, making much more money.
So we learn from our mistake and get smarter at fooling ourselves. We realize that our goals were just physical pleasures that can't possibly bring true meaning to our lives so we say, maybe I don't need a new job but I certainly need to be respected in my current one. After all, everyone needs respect in order to feel appreciated and valued right? And as long as I'm improving my life, I could stand to loose twenty pounds; I know I'd like myself more if I lost weight. We justify this new direction by the guise of becoming a better person and think these new goals are much less shallow.
And here is the most prized achievement in the search for happiness, that sits at the top of the heap for almost everyone on the planet. We believe with every fiber of our being that if we just could find the right partner; the person who will love us unconditionally, someone who will care about what we think and support us through every endeavor. We think if only we had that special person, life would be complete and blissful.
Ironically, unconditional love may indeed be the key to finding lasting joy and fulfilment, but the journey is never what we expect and the result is likely to be better than we can imagine. In our video workshops we share personal stories of our own road to joy and expose the fallacies and pre-conceived ideas we have about love and relationships.
Join us for an in-depth look at why our striving for happiness is so often a failed attempt.
